Via 1World2Wheels comes this great report of Ripon College’s new Velorution Project.

Ripon is asking incoming Freshmen in ‘08-’09 to sign a pledge that they won’t bring a car to campus during the school year. In return, each student who signs gets a new Trek bike, a helmet and a lock. Matt and I both serve as university administrators in our day jobs, and I think I can speak for us both when I say we approve!

Nice work, Ripon! All we do is give incoming Freshmen a shiny new Macbook

I’d take a new Trek or a Macbook over the lame Thinkpad I got anyday!

That’s a sweet deal, though. That would be cool if they did something like that more often, especially at eco-conscious schools like University of New Hampshire (freshman can’t even have cars, but hey, free bikes are great!)

This from their web site . . .

To minimize vehicular traffic on campus, Ripon has systematically moved campus parking from the interior of the campus to the exterior in an effort to make car travel less convenient.

    I AM SO DOWN!

They didn’t give me anything either time I enrolled in college.

I did ride my bike on campus for a while. Sophmore year I broke the funnybone (ouch!) in my left arm in a bike wreck and that ended my ‘cycling career’ until about a year ago when I got back into it.

Sounds like a great program they have implemented to get more people riding.
