Lee Valley Tools (great catalog, btw) has an article about a 16 year old student who made a fully functional wooden bike as a school project.
He notes that the chain was the toughest part, but he actually made the whole thing out wood, using different types based on their particular properties. The article isn’t very long, but it’s worth a read. And the pics are pretty amazing too…

All kidding aside, I’m sure that guy learned a metric-arseload about woodworking by building that thing. I’ve never been a huge fan of school but I love to learn stuff via hands on projects and it gives me great hope to see others who also appreciate making something just to learn the skills and prove it can be done.
