activewheels.jpgThis was once a hack, but will soon become standard practice. Joe Friel points to an invention known as Active Spokes, which is an invention for racing wheels.

The idea is that heavier wheels are desirable in some situations while lighter wheels are desirable in others. The solution is a set of weights that slide along your spokes. When your wheels are turning slower, the weights are closer to the hub; when your wheels are turning faster, the weights are closer to the rim.

The idea is really pretty simple, and it seems like everyone who sees it is amazed that nobody thought of it earlier. The Active Spokes web site has a great page that sorts out all the questions about the physics. Most obviously: you’re still carrying the weight, even when it’s retracted toward the hub.
