The last two months I have noticed a huge trend in NYC - bike frames covered in colored, translucent tape. I have performed some Google searches and nothing has really turned up as far as products/companies that target this new trend.
I see a lot of food delivery guys rocking the new tape jobs but it is not exclusive just to this crowd. Below is an example. It is a bike used for delivery at a local Vietnamese restaurant I frequent. I myself have been using inner tubes to cover most of my frame for quite a while, but I must say this new trend is appealing to me. If anyone has any information on what type of tape this is please feel free to comment. If it’s a bike specific tape, I have not been able to locate information on the web. I guess I could stop by a bike store and ask but I’ve been too lazy.

That’s a delivery guy’s bike!? Discs. Mavic wheels. High-end saddle.
Even odds it was purchased “hot.”

Someone should make a citizens arrest pronto.

Reflective tape- while expensive, it could save you at night.

As far as the “hot” bike is concerned . . . the restaurant is on the Upper West side so I’m sure the rider makes good tips =)

I make custom protective decal kits for bikes.
I make them using premium paint protection film from the auto industry, custom cutting from hand made templates and provide easy to follow instructions for installation. You can hardly see the film, but it’s thick and provides excellent protection from stone chips, scrapes and cable rub. for info on protective tapes look at the ibis forum on mtbr for protective tape and you’ll find my stuff there too. i had used tape for hockey sticks on my frame when i lived in NYC about 15 yrs ago. it was good as camouflage and made it easier to carry the bike onto the subway.

This kind of tape has been used for years in Mexico, mostly on old English style bikes. The reason people would tape the bikes was to protect the paint from getting faded. Is just a simple vinyl tape wrapped very tied, then at the ends is glue together by heating it with a lighter.
Some times people would put foil paper underneath to give a more flasshy look.

The rider might have taped his bike up to make it more ’stealthy’ to keep it from being stolen… I’ve seen quite a few ’sweet’ messaner bikes, rigged the same way, but usually, they make the ‘high-end bike looks as much like a P.O.S. as possible…
