Andrew, AKA the “bikehacks logo creator,” is on business trip in Asia right now and is doing me a solid by snapping photos of bike related stuff. He took this photo in Taichung, Taiwan.

I never really have understood the concept of trying to ride with an umbrella - just seems like more trouble than it would be worth, especially if you were in traffic.

In Japan riding with umbrellas is very common. I’ve even seen people riding with an umbrella in a snowstorm.

Riding while using a mobile phone is also extremely common, but I was never able to spot a person using an umbrella and mobile phone at the same time.

I have just been in Italy and was really surprised by the number of people in cities & towns cycling with umbrellas. This was even through crowded streets where surely only having one hand on the handlebars would be rather unsafe.

I confirm what thePig wrote. I’m italian and I usually ride with my umbrella if it is rainy. It is covered with transaprent PVC, so I can see through it while cycling. Obviously, it isn’t easy.. to tame umbrella in the wind.. but it is the only way to cover my head and shoulders!
I don’t think that having only one hand on the handlebar is unsafe. I simply ride slowly and pay more attention than I do when I use both hands :) … (sorry for my bad english..hope u have understood!)
