Duct Fender/Rack Hack

Another variation on a rear rack hack. Lots of duct tape over a hacked up postal bin. Rubber bands give it that ghetto steeze for sure yo!

Rear Rack Hacks
April 29th, 2008 · 7 Comments
Sometimes a standard bike rack just doesn’t cut it. Cyclists in NYC are quite creative when it comes to creating customized solutions for cargo issues. The common plumbing clamp and zip ties are two of the oft used devices to secure apparatuses to standard racks.
This rider used plumbing clamps to secure [...]

I’d give this an “A” for creativity, but I can’t imagine it’s a very smooth ride.
Xtracycle Bike Rack
April 9th, 2008 · No Comments
I’ve seen a few implementations of a bike-on-a-bike rack, but the Xtracycle really does seem to be made just for this kind of application. This thread on BikeForums has some great shots of a couple of Electras, one with a homemade Xtracycle-mounted bike rack holding the second bike.
The owner of the bikes, Derek (blog), is [...]

Build Your Own Rack Mounted Hydration System
March 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Cyclicio.us points to this fantastic tutorial on making your own rack-mounted hydration system.
The strength of this system is that it keeps the water off your back, the bladder is easily replaced and it’s easy to clean. The tutorial shows the system mounted to a rear rack, but a front mounted rack would probably work [...]

Reader Jim sent us a great front rack hack (say that three times fast) that involves a hacked milk crate. The full Flickr set with annotations can be found here, and Jim’s blog is over here. Thanks Jim!

8 Bombproof DIY Bike Repair Stands
March 5th, 2008 · 2 Comments
Lately I’ve been eyeballing some repair stands and contemplating building my own. I don’t have a real garage, just a carport with a small attached shop area. The shop area has a workbench, but there’s just not much room to move. So I’m thinking of building a movable repair stand. Something that I can put [...]

Community Service: Shovel It
February 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments
Frequent commenter and contributer (see bar end light entry) Ryan gives this example of a bike community service project . . .
A local greenway trail had a section covered in about 4″ of muck from recent rain storms. I knew I wanted to clear it off but how would I get a shovel there? I [...]

DIY Bolt On Front Rack
February 5th, 2008 · 3 Comments
CETMA racks are the coolest. They’re front mounted racks of varying sizes that are pretty much bombproof. And they’re made in Eugene, Oregon…just a couple hours south of me. One day I will acquire one (maybe this year!)–probably a five rail rack with the fence, powdercoated.
I’ve also lusted after Ahearne racks, here in Portland. But [...]
