Hey, thanks for stopping by! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the RSS feed. You can also subscribe to BikeHacks by email. Thanks for visiting!

Ari over at bits and bikes recently did a review of the Monkeylectric spoke light system. As it turns out, the dude who started Monkeylectric is the co founder of the Instructables website.

Ari does an excellent review on his site and if you would like to purchase the product you can even find a coupon code on the bits and bikes site!

    Just wondering how these compare to other lighting systems, such as HokeySpokes? The spokes appear to be quite slender while the Monkeylectric seems a bit bulky.

    From what I’ve read, the HokeySpokes can be programmed to display text messages and the spokes (if you have more than one) can synchronize the images and text.

    I love the idea of these things, but I think I’m too insecure to have something so flashy on my ride.

    I did get a pair of TireSparx last winter, and they created some buzz with other cyclists while providing me with the added visibility I was looking for (I figure it doesn’t hurt to have something a little unusual and eye-catching on those dark and dreary nights, so long as it isn’t too distracting). They’re nothing like either of the Monkeylectric or HokeySpokes systems though.

    @un•named:
    I do compare these to Hokey Spokes in my review, which you can read at http://blog.greaterbayshell.com/2008/05/24/review-monkeylectric-m132s-led-bike-light/.

    To answer a few pf your questions:
    * The Monkeylectric is wider, but it is about half the weight of a Hokey Spokes unit.
    * The text mode on the Hokey Spokes is difficult to program and distracting to watch. I’d recommend against using it.
    * More detailed comparisons are included in my review.

    Sorry about that. That’s what I get for reading so late at night! I have now read the review (doh!) and really appreciate the details about each product.
