Reader Mike sends in this perfectly sensible tip: instead of buying a helmet cover, just pick up shower caps from hotels. They give ‘em away!

Even better: when you get where you’re going, you can can take the shower cap off your helmet and put it on your seat to keep it dry while you’re bike’s locked outside.
Oh, and a shower cap does a great job keeping the 0-degree wind off your head, too.

I used to wear a shower cap over my helmet. Up here on the Wet Coast I used to think it was important to keep the rain off. Once I realised that we don’t melt from the rain I stopped using one. I think what really made me stop was not the fact that the rain hat kept me dry, but the fact that it would cause some sort of terrarium reaction and in actual fact I was wetter when I got to where I was going. In fact things got worse and the terrarium effect caused some sort of concentration of the sweat produced by my skull . This concentrated, acid like sweat would slowly, but surely, drip down into my eyes causing untold pain and anguish.
My advice, we don’t melt, skip the shower cap.
