The cycling world lost a giant recently. I was very saddened to hear that Sheldon Brown passed away. The world needs more Sheldon Browns.

I never had the chance to meet him in person, but I spent hours pouring over his web site. He was a cycling advocate, photographer, and journalist amongst other things. His web site is an encyclopedia of information that I am sure has amused and informed thousands of those trolling the internet for information on cycling related issues, techniques, and hacks.

He was an optimist to the “nth” degree. He even saw being afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis as an opportunity to shine. He had this to say about MS:

“As nasty, rare, incurable diseases go, it’s one of the better ones. If you must acquire a nasty, rare, incurable disease, MS is one of the best things going! I think of it as not so much a ‘tragedy’ as a Really Major Inconvenience.”

If anyone has any Sheldon memories or stories, we would love to hear them. I for one know that I have had many sore fingers from trying to follow his instructions, but his advice always paid off in the end.

Oh man, this is really sad. I’m really sorry to hear about his passing. I got into fixed gear about a year ago and of course I found his website amazingly useful for info. I even e-mailed him blindly to ask a questions and he promptly respond.

The cycling world has truly lost a terrific guy.

My current bike has a wheel that I trued using a wrench, some markers, and (the key ingredient) Sheldon Brown’s tutorials. Cycling has definitely lost a great guy.

Sheldon has helped me with several cycle-related questions via bikeforums.net as well as the many hours I’ve spent at his website. He gave so much of himself and never asked for any compensation from those he helped. Although he was obviously one of the most knowledgable bicycle enthusiests on the planet, he had a down-to-earth personality that made him approchable. He probably never made a lot of money through cycling but he always seemed happy and I believe we can all agree he was successful.

The world will miss you Mr. Brown.

We met once at a bike show and I had the opportunity to meet and talk with him for a brief moment. Here is a photo of Sheldon taking a photo of my bike. A vintage RIGI that Sheldon said he never seen one in real time only photos. I am glad to have had this small chance meeting with the legend.

    RIP Sheldon
