Kickback Hub

Hey, thanks for stopping by! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the RSS feed. You can also subscribe to BikeHacks by email. Thanks for visiting!

Astoria Bike recently posted an entry about the purchase of a kick back hub. The hub provides coaster brake functionality, but with two speeds. The genius? You shift gears by braking, or by slightly back pedaling. Apparently this kind of hub was invented in the early 60s.

hubstripping also posted an entry late last year about Schwinn Cruiser featuring the kick back hub.

I did a bit of searching around but it does not seem that kick back hubs are a hot item through normal sales channels. It seems if you want one you need to contact someone who builds them.

I’ll post more when the wheel is built. Hopefully the two-speed wonder will outweight the 3.5 lb weight.
I don’t think anybody builds kickback hubs anymore. But you can buy them on ebay. The brand name is Bendix.

    The brand name is Sachs.
For me it is, I got one: Torpedo Duomatic, made by Sachs in Germany. They don’t make them anymore, but there are still some unused ones for sale.
