Andrew’s journey also included Japan and there is ample evidence of bike culture in the “Land of the Rising Sun.” I have always wanted to rock a one piece coverall but have yet to indulge. This guy rocks it well.

Nice to see some bike lane action.

When I see pictures like this one, I get a tear in my eye. I’m guessing you have like 100 bikes here that take up the exact amount of space as 8-10 cars might.

You have to admire someone with not one, but two child seats on their bike. That is some mad balance skill.

And finally you have pedestrians and cyclists taking over - that’s a sign I can get behind.

I haven’t seen much pictures of cycling in Japan. Only heard about their passionate interest in Keirin races. Good to see.

To be fair though, that “bike lane” is only for crossing the street after biking on the sidewalk. :)

When I was in Japan, I was surprised to learn that bicycles are supposed to operate on the sidewalks, unlike in the U.S. After my 2nd or so day there, it became 2nd nature to step to the side when you hear a bike bell from behind (every bike has them.) Generally, it works out ok because the sidewalks were usually big enough to accommodate bikes and pedestrians, and bikes have their own paths at crosswalks (as seen in the photos).

Actually, we ride bikes on the roads in Japan. The older folks, children, and less proficient take to the sidewalks, along with the short distance commuter ladies in high heels, skirts, and carrying umbrellas. There are bike lanes but folks park in them. Still, bikes have the right-of-way…that does help!
