In a post a while back I wrote about how I love the concept of bike knickers, but I do not love the thought of departing with massive amounts of money to acquire them. I did not go into great detail about how I made my knickers and have been meaning to return to the topic. In comes reader Adam who sent along a link to his own knicker hack recently.
It seems he is also the beneficiary of an accomplished female assistant. In my case, I tell my wife what I am looking for and she kindly goes about doing all the dirty work. It’s really the comparative advantage concept at work - she has a fashion design degree and I cut myself on sharp things - advantage wife.
Adam’s knicker construction is detailed on his site. The pictures really give you a great visual of what he was looking to accomplish. In my case I just had my wife hack off the lower part of the pants and she went to town on adding custom stitching and other designs that perform no practical function, they just look cool.
Here is Adam with the finished product. I think we are both of the opinion that Lycra shorts underneath solve the comfort problem, and the knickers outside give that style flair - a least for those of us who live in “civilized” cities where people don’t make fun of us for wearing “capri pants.” Visit his site to get inspired and start hacking your own knickers . . . it’s spring after all and temps are rising.
