On a recent jaunt through Chinatown NYC I spotted a bike with a unique hack. You have to admire the thought and time that went into this one. What it lacks in weight consideration, it makes up for in ingenuity. Here’s a first glance:
I speculate that the main use for this hack is for repeated transport of a box or container of specific size. It was parked in front of a fish market and I’m thinking that the rider does daily runs from the water and back to the fish market. It’s 100% speculation, but a good guess me thinks. Here’s another angle:
A rear rack can only carry so much weight and this platform definitely could support a container of considerable weight. Depending on the width there could be possible knee rub issues. One other consideration that came to mind was how much weight would be added to the bike if this platform got wet. If it rained I can imagine that all the wood would wick up water like a sponge.
One this is for sure, from the condition of the bike it has been a work horse!

How about a seat for a child? Looks like it’s got foot rests and possibly even wear marks low on the handlebar where the kid holds on…
I agree with Jim. My first thought was child seat.
Interesting how it is attached to the frame – looks like by wedging the pieces against the frame with notches cut into the wood, except for where the front horizontal piece attaches to the two down columns using nails.
I say kid seat too.
