Congestion Pricing Plan Doored
April 14th, 2008 · 1 Comment
It was a sad day in NYC last week when Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal for the first ever congestion pricing plan in the U.S. was effectively “doored.” timesunion.com had this to say about the plan:
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wanted congestion pricing — that is, to impose tolls on cars and trucks entering Manhattan’s [...]

Xtracycle Bike Rack
April 9th, 2008 · No Comments
I’ve seen a few implementations of a bike-on-a-bike rack, but the Xtracycle really does seem to be made just for this kind of application. This thread on BikeForums has some great shots of a couple of Electras, one with a homemade Xtracycle-mounted bike rack holding the second bike.
The owner of the bikes, Derek (blog), is [...]

Food For Fuel
February 20th, 2008 · 6 Comments
I have become increasingly interested in the food that fuels me. Might be the high blood pressure that the doc says is “bad” or it might be the excellent experience I had before an adventure race with oatmeal (used to detest oatmeal). Dunno. Regardless, the effect of food on my body has become interesting to [...]
911: A Green Response
February 18th, 2008 · 3 Comments
Not everyone lives in a big city but I am sure we have all encountered a situation where traffic is in a state of gridlock and an emergency vehicle cannot get through. This seems like almost a daily occurrence in my neighborhood in NYC. I find it very hard to believe that in [...]

101 36 Uses For Your Bike Trailer
February 13th, 2008 · 4 Comments
A few weeks ago I ran across an article with an intriguing title: 101 Uses For A Bike Trailer. I was disappointed to find that the article didn’t really list the 101 uses. In fact, it just listed five uses for their bike trailer.
I’ve got a bike trailer and I was pretty sure it wouldn’t [...]

Amp Human Energy Event
February 4th, 2008 · 1 Comment
T.V. commercials involving bicycles are not a staple on television (unless maybe they are being carried around by a car on a roof rack) so I was stoked to see a commercial related to cycling during the Super Bowl pre-game coverage. While it was not a commercial directly aimed at cycling, cycling was the [...]

Move By Bike
February 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment
There’s a bit of a movement (heh) going on in Portland (and elsewhere?) to help folks move their households entirely by bicycle. It definitely takes a village to do it, but it sure looks fun.
The latest MxB took place yesterday. I wasn’t there, but the move was well documented (and more).
This a great and [...]

Filtration bike
January 30th, 2008 · No Comments
This is the kind of human powered innovation I love seeing. It’s essentially a pedal powered water filtration system for developing nations. Pedal from your home to the water supply. Fill the tank. Pedal home. As you pedal, the water is filtered. There’s also a clutch with which the rider can disengage the drive and [...]

Bicycle Powered Television
January 23rd, 2008 · 1 Comment
I love all the uses people come up with for the energy created by bikes.
The idea of pedal powered television is killer. It’s the opposite of couch potato, since you’re literally paying for the TV you watch with your own sweat.
Be sure to check out the video linked at the top of that page. [...]
