I was running an errand recently and ran across what I thought was a cruel joke. Take a look at this:

A bike rack shaped like a car? Cars already rule the roads in Manhattan, now they need to start ruling the sidewalks as well? “What symbolism is this?” I asked myself. I then stumbled across an article in the New York Times and discovered that the rack was designed by bicycle enthusiast, and lead singer of the Talking Heads, David Byrne. As stated in the Times article:

The nine racks — in shiny red, black and silver — are intended to promote bicycling, which has been a main emphasis of the current transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan.

Below are all the racks that have been installed. Full details available via the NYCDOT site.

I came across a video on youtube about these. It’s Dave Byrne talking about the inspiration and taking you to the shop where they are made. It seems there is another video now. This one seems to be people going around finding the racks in the city.

I love Dave Byrne. I’ve loved Talking Heads for over ten years now. He’s even cooler now that I know he’s a bike enthusiast and bonafied genius.

Those are sooooooooo coool! But I agree about the car shaped one. Bikes are all about fighting the congestion of the car. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Oh well. Keep those fixed gears alive!
