The Cage Rocket
January 23rd, 2008 · 4 Comments
When you commute or run around town you often lock up and run in and out of places. You still face the threat of that minor mechanical problem or flat tire so tools are a necessity. A variety of small bags for tools are designed to fit under your seat or possibly connect [...]

Working Wooden Bike
January 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments
Lee Valley Tools (great catalog, btw) has an article about a 16 year old student who made a fully functional wooden bike as a school project.
He notes that the chain was the toughest part, but he actually made the whole thing out wood, using different types based on their particular properties. The article isn’t very [...]

Modification: Pedicab Hack
January 22nd, 2008 · 3 Comments
New York City Pedicabs have come under fire in recent months. The crux of it is an edict by the Department of Consumer Affairs to limit the number of pedicabs in New York City to 325. As a side note, there are an estimated 13,000 licensed auto taxis in New York City. [...]

Sew Your Own Cycling Cap
January 21st, 2008 · 6 Comments
Personally, I think cycling caps are goofy looking. But maybe that’s the point, I dunno. I’d really just rather wear a skullcap or beanie or something. I’m kind of a dork, though.
Over on Flickr, user Panda Face has uploaded a very nice pattern for making your own cycling cap. You gotta know how to sew, [...]

Pop A Beer With Your Granny Gear
January 21st, 2008 · No Comments
This helpful video from MoutainBikeRidersTV.com shows how to open a beer bottle using your frame and chainring. Very helpful tip…you can never have enough bottle opener options!
And, you know, being from Portland and all, I should probably be snubbin’ on their choice of beer. But I’ve got nothin’ but props for Fat Tire. [...]

Bike Tree!
January 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment
Supa sweet bike rack that requires no locks and resists thieves (at least thieves without ladders). Use your smart card to bring down the rack, roll your bike up to the tree, hook your tire into the rack, and watch it float into the canopy. I love this. (via)

Modular Cargo Rig
January 20th, 2008 · 4 Comments
Quick pointer to a great bike hack over at BikeCommuters.com. The picture pretty much says it all, but basically you cobble together a spare seatpost, saddle, seapost-mounted rack, and some panniers.
Bingo, you’ve got a hot-swappable cargo module. Keep your bike free of cargo cruft until you need it, then drop in this modular cargo rig.
Extra [...]

Dual PVC Bike Rack
January 19th, 2008 · No Comments
Here is an excellent tutorial on making your own two-bike rack from standard PVC pipe. If your conscience can handle the environmental disaster that is PVC, then get on it. I’ll be making mine this weekend!
This rack was designed by a guy who does adventure races (you know, with the compass, and the running and [...]

DIY Waterproof Bag Liner
January 19th, 2008 · No Comments
Of course the easiest way to make a waterproof bag liner is to put your stuff in a plastic bag. Then put another plastic bag over that one, with the opening facing the opposite way. Then shove the whole thing into your backpack/pannier/whatever. Works great.
But maybe that’s too easy for you. Maybe you’ve got more [...]
